We are deeply saddened by the tragic and unexpected passing of Bruce Connolly.
NT Farmers joins the broader agricultural community in recognising the lasting contribution Bruce made to the industry, particularly across broadacre sectors.
Bruce was a longstanding and exceptional member of the Northern Territory Farmers Association board, serving for six years as a director and the last four on the Executive.
Through his work and advocacy, Bruce made an enormous contribution not only to our organisation, but to the people and industries he cared deeply about. He was a tireless advocate for producers, guided always by a strong sense of purpose and commitment.
Always generous with his time and knowledge, always well prepared, always open to the views of others but never wavering in his conviction to the importance of farming and farming families in the NT.
Bruce understood the complexities surrounding the social licence for farming in the Northern Territory and was a fierce advocate for best practice farm management. Like all farmers, he was angered and frustrated when misinformation impacted our reputation and our right to farm. In true Bruce fashion, rather than just talk about it, he took action.
He spoke proudly about the industry at every opportunity, backing farmers and the role they play in supporting the broader community. That is work we will continue to honour his legacy. Through NT Farmers, a platform he helped shape, we will continue to tell the real story of farming in the Territory with the honesty and integrity Bruce brought to everything he did.
Bruce lived and worked in the Northern Territory for much of his recent life, calling Tipperary Station home for a number of years as the station’s Farm Manager, where he spearheaded the introduction of dryland cotton to the NT. Bruce served on the Board of Cotton Australia, and was the inaugural President of the Northern Territory Cotton Growers Association which he was instrumental in founding. In 2022, he was awarded as High Achiever of the Year at the Australian Cotton Industry Awards for his success in dryland cotton in the NT.
While Bruce never sought the spotlight, his leadership was evident in the respect and regard others had for him. He was a man of strong principles, clear vision and a generous mentor, always willing to share his knowledge and encourage others to step forward.
Everyone at NT Farmers will miss having Bruce’s knowledge and kindness around us. Our thoughts are with Bruce’s family, friends and colleagues at this difficult time.
