Vegetables

Vegetables

$61 million worth of vegetables are produced by farmers in the Territory. Vegetables under production include but are not limited to:

  • Snake beans
  • Okra
  • Long melon and other Asian melons
  • Lettuce
  • Cucumber
  • Tomato
  • Zucchini
  • Pumpkin
  • Chilli.

Production is undertaken by small commercial family farms, located predominately in the Darwin and Katherine regions of the Northern Territory. The majority of production is sold to interstate wholesale markets. Expansion of the sector is limited by the restricted water availability in the Top End region. NT Farmers are committed to ensuring that responsible water allocations provide farmers with enough water for their crops while preserving environmental flows.
NT Farmers association actively engages with vegetable farmers to support their activities and to prevent biosecurity breakouts affecting the industry.
