The NT melon sector supplies roughly 23% of the Australian market. The dry season in the Territory provides the perfect conditions for our farmers to grow high quality melons during the mild NT winter. Producers in the Territory take advantage of their growing conditions to supply key interstate markets when it is too cold for southern producers to grow melons.
Predominantly seedless watermelons with some rock melon and honey dew melons are grown in the Territory. Melons are farmed right across the NT, including in the dry regions south of Tennant Creek. The melon industry contributes approximately $69.4 million to the local Territory economy and is a significant employer in the plant-based industry.
NT Farmers acknowledges the traditional owners and custodians of country throughout Australia and acknowledges their continuing connection to land, water and community. We pay our respects to the people, the cultures and the elders past, present and emerging. This website is made possible thanks to the NT Government's Community Benefit Fund
